BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BUT COLORADO IS ALMOST DEAD LAST WHEN IT COMES TO RECYCLING.

Colorado's recycling rate is a mere 11%, when compared to the national average of 35%. Why? Single stream recycling is simply not working.  Turns out glass is one of our biggest problems, with an estimated 790 million pounds sent to landfills every year.

LET'S TACKLE COLORADO RECYCLING ONE STEP AT A TIME

starting with GLASS

THE 1 FOR 3 PROGRAM

The objective

With a focus on the problem of glass in single stream recycling, our 1 For 3 program seeks to provide the public with glass-only recycling opportunities through the placement of Glass Recycling drop-off Stations throughout Colorado communities.

Through our program Colorado residents will be educated on the importance of source-separated recycling, and encouraged to take action by utilizing Glass Recycling Stations in their area! Check out the map of these stations so you can find one near you!

HOW IT WORKS

EnviroHub has partnered up with Clear Intentions, a local glass recycler and processor, to make this program possible. While EnviroHub covers the cost of these glass stations for communities and works to get them placed, Clear Intentions services the stations, hauling the glass back to their facility where it is processed and sent back to local manufacturers.

Unlike the current single stream systems, the glass you deposit in these Glass Stations is 100% recycled, and its done right here in Colorado.

"1 FOR 3" ?

It's not just about the glass. We're saving other materials too.

Single-stream is a recycling system which lets users put different kinds of recyclables like paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass all together in one bin.

The problem? Glass breaks. And through the collection process it breaks into smaller and smaller pieces, becoming nearly impossible to separate out from the other materials on sorting lines. These recyclables are therefore labeled as contaminated, and along with the broken glass, are sent straight to the landfill.

Estimates show that every POUND of glass in single stream contaminates up to THREE POUNDS of other recyclables. Therefore, for every POUND of glass we recycle separately from single-stream, up to 3 POUNDS of other recyclables are prevented from being sent to the landfill.
